### Summary
The Assistant Nurse Manager (ANM), Acute Psych Unit, is responsible for assisting the Mental Health Nurse Manager in the assessment, planning, provision, and evaluation of the Unit. The ANM is also responsible for organizing the unit based orientation, training, and development of staff, and providing input for the evaluation of their performance to the Nurse Manager.

### Responsibilities
The Nurse Manager executes the position responsibility that demonstrates leadership, experience, and creative approaches to management of complex patient care. The Assistant Manager is an expert registered nurse, and demonstrates performance and leadership that is broad enough to improve the care for a group of patients. The Assistant Manager is responsible for the documented outcomes at the program or service level. Program or service level outcomes must be broad and complex and can be demonstrated at any organizational level within a facility, VISN, or VACO. Program is defined as a substantial coordinated group of activities impacting patients/residents and/or employees. The ANM demonstrates leadership that is sustainable regardless of role and incorporates professional standards of care and implements broad-reaching evidence-based change. Practice follows the ANA Code of Ethics for Nurses. The Assistant Manager actively leads groups and takes the lead in practice changes, is active in the facility nursing community and beyond, sought out for expertise, and actively volunteers and participates on committees. Care will be provided in the least restrictive, most cost-effective manner through use of the clinical practice guidelines and clinical pathways. Evidence of health promotion and chronic disease indices will be monitored through the clinical practice guidelines and performance measures.
**Work Schedule:** Monday to Friday 8:00 am to 4:30 pm/Subject on call

### Qualifications
**Basic Requirements**:
* **United States Citizenship**: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
* **Education:** Graduate of a school of professional nursing with, a BSN with approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience required.
* **Licensure:**Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia.
**Preferred Experience:** Planning and assigning work for subordinates, setting priorities, preparing schedules, work; recognizing the capabilities of subordinates; evaluating performance, making recommendations for appointments/promotions of staff, coach, counsel, and instruct personnel, resolving complaints, Identify developmental and training needs, performance improvement.
**Grade Determinations**: The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade:
* Nurse II - A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience required.
* Nurse III - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree.
**Reference:** VA Regulations, specifically VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G-6 Nurse Qualification Standard. This can be found in the local Human Resources Office.
**Physical Requirements:** This position requires visual acuity, keen hearing, clear distinctive speech, and manual dexterity. This position could require long periods of continued walking, standing, stooping, sitting, bending, pulling, and pushing. Transferring patients/residents and objects may be required, may be exposed to infections and contaminated materials and may be required to don protective clothing in isolation situations or operative/invasive procedures. ANM may occasionally be exposed to patients/residents who are combative secondary to delirium, dementia, or psychiatric disorders.

### Additional information
Annual leave shall accrue for full-time Nurses, and Nurse Anesthetists at the rate of 8 hours for each full biweekly pay period.
