Bridge Maintenance Specialist - Transportation Maintenance Specialist 2

This transportation maintenance specialist position functions as a member of a bridge maintenance crew and performs any required manual labor or equipment operation necessary to maintain, repair and/or reconstruct roadway/highway, freeway, bridges and/or rest area facilities. This position may also be responsible for performing winter maintenance during the winter months.

Duties & Responsibilities

Bridge Crew

+ Maintain, repair and replace a variety of bridge bearings and expansion joints.

+ Perform concrete demolition using pneumatic and electric tools, including jackhammers, chipping guns, rotary hammers, concrete saws, etc.

+ Prepare structures for surface work.

+ Mix and apply bonding agents; mix, place and finish concrete.

+ Remove, fabricate, repair and replace damaged or fatigued steel bridge members using welding techniques and equipment, reading and interpreting detailed blueprints;

+ Apply working knowledge of steel frame straightening (heating and shrinking) techniques, come-a-longs, port-a-powers and C clamps.

+ Remove defective wood members and replace caps, stringers, flooring, hand and guardrails, fellow guards, headwalls, braces, piling, bridging, sills, catwalks, and sidewalks using wood-related hand and power tools including power saws, chainsaws, drills, levels, squares, T-bevels, etc.

+ Use established traffic control procedures utilizing detailed plans such as field drawn sketches or bridge design construction plans and specifications.

+ Perform minor surface repair including hand, pothole and concrete patching, and small inlay work.

+ Operate heavy trucks, rollers, blades, and motor graders to patch large sections of highway, remove slides, build/repair roadway shoulders and bike paths and perform minor betterment construction.

Winter Maintenance

+ Operate frame mounted tailgate and tag-along sanders, deicer trucks and spreaders to sand roadways.

+ Operate rotary snow plows and truck mounted push plows to clear snow from the roadway.

+ Perform minor surface repair including hand, pothole and concrete patching and small inlay work, build/repair roadway shoulders and bike paths, and perform minor construction.

+ Sweep highway facilities such as shoulders and intersections; perform clean-up of sidewalks, graffiti, paving, bridge walks, and islands.

+ Plow snow and sand roadways.

+ Maintain, repair or replace guardrails, barriers, fences, glare screens, roadway delineators or milepost markers; apply, maintain and/or replace roadway/highway striping and/or legends.

+ Respond to accidents and other emergencies; secure area by providing traffic control and coordinate activities of other agencies and the public to ensure the safety of the public and crews; assist with clean up involving accidents and spills.

+ Read and interpret plans and layouts for projects.

Working Conditions:

+ Operate on or near heavy equipment and power tools.

+ Subject to noise, adverse weather, dangerous equipment, pesticides, fertilizers, and hazardous waste materials.

+ Work is performed in and around heavy, high speed traffic.

+ Must walk, stand, bend, and stoop for extended periods of time.

+ Perform frequent lifting & carrying up to 50 pounds of materials and equipment.

+ Work at heights up to 300 feet.

+ Work in confined spaces.

+ Work in excavations to depths of more than 5 feet.

+ Work over large bodies of water.

+ Employees may be required to work any hours/shift, any day of the week, including holidays, for emergency, on-call and weather-related purposes.

+ Frequent travel within the region within the region is required.

Qualifications, Required & Requested Skills

Minimum Qualifications:

Two years of maintenance and/or construction experience in roadway/highway, bridge, sign, drawbridge or landscape (any type of ground maintenance, including tree, shrub and lawn maintenance; sprinkler system maintenance, cleaning ditches and catch basins, or work related to professional/commercial or public landscaping, farming or logging);


Experience in each of the following areas:

+ Operating heavy and/or light motorized equipment;

+ Using hand and power tools;

+ Performing minor servicing of equipment, AND

+ Applying safety procedures.


Two years of experience operating construction and maintenance machinery to include one or more of the following types: front-end loader, road grader, bulldozer, backhoe, tractor/low-boy, and 5- or 10- yard dump truck.

Special Qualifications:

+ Employee will be required to use a commercial motor vehicle to conduct business; you must possess and maintain a valid commercial driver's license "Class A" CDL with air brake and tanker endorsement (without manual transmission and 5th wheel restriction) with an acceptable driving record that meets all established agency, state and federal requirements pertaining to a commercial driver's license; or have the ability to acquire one within six months of hire (ODOT will cover training and costs) to be considered eligible for this position. We will conduct pre-employment driving records checks on our final candidate(s).

+ Ability to drive a manual transmission vehicle.
